On the trail, Merlin is steady, honest, and enjoyable. He has been regularly ridden and enjoyed by my teenage daughter. He confidently crosses water, navigates rough terrain, crosses bridges, and travels up and down inclines without hesitation. Naturally more "whoa" than "go," he is an uncomplicated ride with a soft feel in the bridle, a floating trot, and a comfortable canter.
Merlin is equally impressive in harness and has proven himself to be a reliable and trustworthy driving horse. He stands quietly for harnessing and hooking, is safe in traffic, and has been driven confidently alongside a four-lane highway. Never pushy or forward, he is the kind of horse that gives his driver confidence. In fact, I feel comfortable handing the lines over to my 3-year-old son. He has been lady and children driven and always takes care of his passengers.
Around the farm, Merlin is safe and sensible. Dogs, cattle, and other livestock do not faze him, and he is unbothered by tarps and will proudly carry a flag. He is easy to own, whether stalled or living outside, gets along well in a pasture setting with other horses, and stays barefoot with excellent feet. He is easy to catch, load, haul, and handle, making him a low-maintenance partner that is a pleasure to have around.
